The Quit Smoking Mindset
In order to quit smoking you must have the correct mindset. It is your mind that controls your body to perform the act of smoking, and so it is the mind that must be worked with in order to quit smoking for good. It is virtually impossible to quit smoking unless you apply these following mindset rules.
Allow no “wiggle room”
To be successful quitting smoking you must ABSOLUTELY make up your mind that you will not smoke EVER again. If you give yourself even the slightest amount of wiggle room, then you are very likely to fail.
What I mean by wiggle room is allowing yourself to manipulate your own self to quit smoking by giving yourself vague rules to adhere to. So for instance you might say to yourself
“I will not smoke unless I get really stressed.”
The problem with this statement is that a person can very easily find a reason to be “stressed”. They have effectively given themselves permission to smoke when “stressed”. We all get stressed at times, plus “stress” is a vague term in itself that is open for interpretation. “I was stressed because I was in a traffic jam” is not a reason to start smoking again.
“I will wean myself of smoking gradually.”
This approach rarely leads to a person totally quitting for good. They still have given themselves permission to smoke, albeit at a reduced rate. This reduced smoking has no checks in place, and usually creeps back up to their levels of smoking before too long.
The only way this approach could work is if you have some definite plan with the rate you reduce your smoking. So for instance if you smoke 20 per day, you could reduce it by 1 every day until you get to zero. So 19 the following day, 18 the day after, and soon. This would then take you 20 days to start becoming a non smoker.
“I will quit smoking for as long as I can.”
This statement is simply not committed enough. “As long as I can” is far too vague. “2 hours is all I can manage” would be a plausible response from many people. “As long as I can” implies to yourself that it won't be forever. This just sets you up for failure.
The only real way to give yourself a great chance of quitting smoking is to say to yourself...
“From now and forever I will not smoke at all for any reason, or in any circumstance.”
You have to be totally unequivocal about it. Give yourself no wiggle room. No room to manoeuvre, because most people will eventually look for these loopholes and attempt to exploit them. It is human nature. You will find a reason why you “have” to smoke, and will do so. This is regardless of the fact that no one “has” to smoke.
Set an exact time to quit
As we know, quitting smoking is all about your mindset. You have to really want to quit smoking and you have to be definite about it. Give yourself an exact date and a time that you are going to quit smoking and stick to it rigidly.
Many people say statement such as “I will quit smoking in the new year.” When is the new year? Is it as soon as the clocks hit 12pm on 31 December? Is it when you wake up the next day? Is it just some random point throughout the beginning of the year? When does the beginning of the year become the middle of the year? It is just too vague and won't motivate you to quit.
You need to say something like”From 9pm tonight I will never smoke again”. It may be scary, but it works. In fact it is scary because it works.
Hypnosis can help strengthen your will, and help you think in a more definite way that you really will quit smoking for good. It can focus your mind. Hypnotherapy communicates with your subconscious mind, which is the part where all your habits and urges are formed. It can help convince you deep within your subconscious mind that you can and will quit smoking for good. It gives you that extra edge.
Another benefit hypnotherapy can give you is that is sets an exact time for when you become a non smoker. As soon as the hypnosis session is over, this is the time that you now no longer smoke. This can really help eliminate inner conflict of when you are about to quit.
Regardless of whether you decide to use hypnotherapy to help you quit smoking or not, remember that you must be definite with yourself. Pick a specific time and date to quit smoking and stick with it. Tell yourself that you will absolutely not smoke for any reason whatsoever. This will help empower you to become a non smoker for the rest of your life.
